Portfolio Statement: " My prints for the “Call to Consciousness” Portfolio are a variable edition, created using scraps of fabric silkscreened with repeat patterns, originally made for previous artworks. These recycled prints’ patterns reference birth control, consumerism, suburban sprawl, and mid-century notions of family, success, and social roles—issues which continue to affect and inform debate and society on a national and global scale. My edition speaks on multiple levels about recycling, reuse, and collaboration, as well as approaches to change that allow for our deep human desires for continuity with change, autonomy with connection, and positive steps forward in a changing environment and global society.
Reconfigured into a new context using traditional patchwork quilting methods, these printed patterns take on new meaning in relation to each other and the embroidered words at their center—words gathered through collaboration with friends and family across various miles and social circles. Each word is a different take on the concept of “RE_____”, and speaks to the practice of repetition and reworking inherent in printmaking, as well as in the cycles of repetition and change in collective and individual histories and experiences. Collecting and patching together words, like the nine-patch block pattern of the prints, speaks to potential approaches to positive change in all aspects of society—that of collaboration and the inclusion and celebration of a multiplicity of voices.
Much appreciation goes out to all my collaborators: Justin P., Melanie K., Anna C., Katie M., Mary M., Ballard M., Brent H., Taylor L., Erin M., Jacqui S., Joey M., Maribeth N., Peg M., Peggy W., Courtney B., Madison F., Ellen M., Tyler D., Mallory R.
